A 28-year-old male suspect was arrested in a deep slumber after raping an 80-year-old woman on Saturday morning 07 June 2005, at about 04:00 in Ngcoya locality, Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape Province. Even when the neighbours arrived on the scene after they had been called by the grandchild, the man was still fast asleep.
According to the police spokesperson in the OR Tambo District, Captain Welile Matyolo, the victim was asleep with her grandchildren, the eldest eight years old and noticed the suspect already inside the house. Cpt Matyolo said it is alleged that the suspect threatened the victim not to cry and raped her, falling asleep afterwards. He said neighbours were called and found the suspect still fast asleep and he was held until police arrival and arrested the suspect. Meanwhile, the male suspect is expected to appear before Lusikisiki Magistrate court soon facing rape charge.
In a statement the Acting OR Tambo District Commissioner, Brigadier Vukile Ntuli praised the local community for their professional handling of the matter and encouraged them to always work closely with police in fighting crime in their areas.
