The Mnquma Local Municipality this week handed over keys to a second group of Skiti residents in Butterworth, who were displaced by floods in June. Among the beneficiaries were elderly citizens, people with physical challenges and those living on the riverbank.
According to Mnquma spokesperson Loyiso Mplatshane, more than 60 flood victims have now been relocated as part of government efforts to bring back normalcy to the lives of the displaced people. He revealed that 120 temporary shelters have been completed and more victims will be relocated in the near future. Meanwhile, the handing over was led by Portfolio Head for Community Services, Cllr Zola Layiti. The occupants expressed relief and joy after moving into their new homes.
Pamela Galoshe was over the mood for this unimaginable rescue they got from the municipality and government. She said the government was caring since the calamity struck them. “We were taken to the community hall and Mnquma provided food for us, we never felt any isolation up until receiving these shelters which are going to change our lives completely. Yhuu! I solemnly lost words to thank the government,” concluded Galoshe.
