The Clarkebury Institution, one of South Africa’s oldest and most distinguished centres of learning, will on 25-26 April 2026 commemorate 196 years of existence. This landmark celebration will be held at its historic campus in Ngcobo in the Eastern Cape.

Founded in 1830, Clarkebury has played a cardinal role in shaping generations of leaders who have contributed meaningfully to South Africa’s social, political, and educational landscape. Among its most celebrated former students was Nelson Mandela, whose early educational journey at Clarkebury helped lay the foundation for his enduring legacy of leadership and service,

Meanwhile, this year’s anniversary celebration will bring together alumni, government leaders, traditional authorities, church leaders, educators, learners, and members of the broader community to reflect on the institution’s rich history and reaffirm a shared commitment to advancing quality education.

Furthermore, amongst the highlights of the celebration will include a special tribute to historic alumni, including icons such as Dr A.B Xuma which Engcobo LM was named after him. Also the official introduction of campus-wide free WIFI, generously sponsored by Afrihost, aimed at enhancing digital learning for both students and educators.

Speaking on behalf of the celebration representatives of the Clarkebury Alumni Foundation, a Ngqeleni born Vizard Nkonji stressed that the anniversary is not only a moment of reflection, but also a call to action. “As we celebrate 196 years of excellence, we are reminded of our responsibility to preserve this legacy while actively investing in the future of our learners. Clarkebury is not just a school- it is a symbol of resilience, transformation, and hope,” he concluded.
