KSD Mayor Cllr Nyaniso Nelani urges rate payers to report vandalism.

The King Sabatha Dalindyebo (KSD) Local Municipality (LM) has called on rate payers, business owners and members of the public at large to report any suspected vandalism/criminal activities by dialing Toll Free Hotline number to report any particular incident. The call was made by KSD Executive Mayor Nyaniso Nelani during the recent media briefing held in Mthatha.

Nelani’s appeal followed the ongoing electricity outrages over the past few days. The electricity disruptions immensely affected areas within Mthatha 2, including

Southernwood, Bhongweni, Zimbane Valley and surrounding communities.

“We are fully aware of the impact this has had on households, on small businesses, on safety, and on the general functioning of our community. As the leadership of this Municipality, we do not take this lightly,” he said.

What initially appeared to be a technical fault soon revealed itself to be far more serious and concerning.

Upon investigation, the KSD technical teams discovered that critical infrastructure had been deliberately tampered with. In Southernwood, a ring main unit was set alight, and further damage was identified on cables feeding the Bunting mini substation.

Additional faults were detected on feeders supplying surrounding areas, compounding the challenge of restoration. These were not ordinary system failures but acts of vandalism and sabotage.

“As a Municipality, we are deeply concerned that these acts are not isolated incidents, but form part of a growing pattern of infrastructure vandalism and cable theft that has been affecting Mthatha over a prolonged period. These criminal actions are undermining service delivery, placing enormous pressure on our financial resources, and eroding public confidence,” concluded Nelani.
