The allege ATM scammers to lose their treasure

The two accused of cyber-crime, Mongameli Tom (39) and Sikhumbuzo Honono (35), are expected to lose an amount of R94 708, 60, after Bhisho High Court granted preservation order recently. This sum of money was recovered while they were traveling in a hired Toyota Fortuner during their arrest.

The matter originated from an inter-provincial investigation initiated by the Western Cape SAPS Commercial Crime Unit, following a series of highly coordinated Automated Teller Machines (ATM) theft incidents that resulted in cumulative financial losses estimated to R7 million.

It is alleged that the suspects utilized specialized and illicit software to manipulate ATM into unlawfully dispensing large sums of cash. The suspects reportedly disguised themselves in uniforms resembling those of Fidelity Security Services to stimulate legitimate maintenance operations and evaded detection.

On 17 March 2025, members of KuGompo Hawks acting on credible intelligence information traced the suspects after they had vacated accommodation around KuGompo area. A coordinated operational response, reinforce by Peddie Visible Policing and the SAPS K9 Unit led to the successful interception of the suspects at N2 route towards Gqeberha. Upon searching the vehicle critical evidentiary material, including a laptop and data cables suspected to have been utilized in the commission of cyber-enabled offences. Additional items seized included high-value branded clothing and a Fidelity Security Services uniform, further corroborating operandi.

Meanwhile, subsequent investigative development on 18 March 2025, confirmed that two ATM sites which was Shell Garage and NK Service Station in Mdantsane had been targeted prior to the suspects’ apprehension. Further investigation divulged that an undisclosed amount of money was unlawfully dispensed using identical technological methods. Another investigation conducted by police positively identified Tom as a key participant in these incidents. The duo is still behind bars and the criminal case is currently pending transfer to the Regional court for trial.
